More than 50,000 children and teens annually participate in the Louisville Free Public Library’s Summer Reading Program, the library’s largest and longest-running program. For 25 years, through the generosity of its donors, the Library Foundation has sponsored Summer Reading.
The library’s commitment to Summer Reading is founded on decades of research proving that public library summer reading programs prevent the “summer slide” – children’s reading level regression between academic years. The expected outcomes of the Summer Reading program are simple: children who participate in the program will
– maintain or increase their reading levels during the summer,
– cultivate a love of reading,
– develop a greater intellectual curiosity, and
– perform better academically.
